Atalaya Castle is a historic house in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, designed by Archer Huntington. It is a square one-story structure measuring 40,000 sq. feet. The courtyard at the center of the house makes up the middle. The house has thirty rooms. This includes the Huntingtons’ living space and other areas for their artistic endeavors. A water tower, measuring forty feet high, is part of the courtyard.
It looks like a prison, standing amongst palm trees and swinging tress. The castle is an impressive structure that conceals a stunning property with beautiful gardens and many rooms. The historic home was Anna Huntington and Archer Huntington’s winter home. They had lived with tuberculosis for many years and were unable to return to their New York City life. The charming locale is now an historic landmark with many celebrations and events to offer.
Atalaya is still in good condition, but sadly, it is no longer home to the Huntingtons. The home was constructed in the early 1900s as a vacation retreat for a wealthy couple. The iron window grilles are by Anna Huntington, however the iron windows have been lost. Despite its stately appearance, many of the rooms have no windows, and the cool, airy rooms remain damp and cool.
