Little River Land Marks

Historic properties and buildings are a part of the history of the area, and Little River is no different. Near Highway 17 and Mineola Avenue, Little River offers many opportunities to experience history.

Many parcels have at least 50-year-old history and are considered historic landmarks. The first property to receive historic designation was Parson’s Table, which was built in 1885. The town was once called Yankee Town.

Another Little River treasure is the Vereen Memorial Historical Garden. The Vereen family once owned this 115-acre property. You can find graves of family members here, and hike or bike through the grounds. 

The gardens also offer a great view of Little River’s nature. It is also known as the “best kept secret” of Little River. Because of its scenic setting, it is a favorite destination for birdwatchers.

Dorchester was an important town in early South Carolina settlement, but it officially ceased to be a town after 1751. 

You can visit the Old White Meeting House, which is located on James Henry Hammond’s plantation. It houses a large collection of artifacts that relate to Hammond’s history and present-day life. Little River SC has been home to Native Americans for over 10,000 years. The first Europeans to document Native American inhabitants in the area were the Waccamaw people, who occupied the land along the banks of the Little River. For a steady diet, the Waccamaw tribe hunted game and collected it. Waties Island was also home to the Waccamaw tribe, which is a barrier island in Long Bay. Native American burial mounds in the area indicate that the Native people were extremely advanced.

Horry County’s population has grown rapidly since 1970. It now boasts more than 250,000 residents. Horry County is the fourth most populous county in South Carolina, with projected growth to 584,500 by 2040. Little River SC’s population is estimated to be approximately 39,000. It is projected to increase to 72,000 in 2040. Longs has 7,592 residents and will grow to 35,000 by 2040.

Located along the Intracoastal Waterway, Little River is the last town in South Carolina before the state line. Native Americans called the river Mineola in 17th-century refuge. Here were refuge for bootleggers and smugglers as well as pirates. George Washington dined in the area in 1791 while traveling the Kings Highway. The closest major city to Little River is Myrtle Beach.

Little River is a wonderful place to live. The town’s mild and warm summer temperatures make it a great place to call home. The beach is only a half mile from the house.
