Socastee is a census-designated place in Horry County, South Carolina. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 19,952.
The Socastee National Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, and it represents one of the last intact examples of post-Civil War development in South Carolina.
It contains good examples of architecture prevalent in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The historic district consists of two houses from the turn-of-the-century and a store. Socastee is also home to a swing bridge, which shares historical significance with the Methodist Church.
Several miles of the Intracoastal Waterway meander through Socastee. The Waccamaw River is a source of recreational pleasure for residents and visitors. The waterway is 30 miles long and 90 feet wide. It is also the longest man-made ditch in the country. The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway was built in 1936 and is the only road to the town. It added much-needed transportation to the area.
The Waccateee Zoo is a must-see for animal lovers. Founded as a private collection in Charleston, the zo features more than 100 species of animals. It is open daily, and weather permitting. From Charleston, you can take a tour of the zoo, or you can visit the nearby Charleston. It is a great way to start a vacation in the South Carolina Lowcountry. A historic home in Socastee, the Sarvis House, is another beautiful example. Located on the corner of Peachtree Road and Dick Pond Road, the Sarvis House has a gable roof and wide overhangs. It also features a full front porch with a diamond lattice railing. The rear “L” portion features a wash porch and a chimney. It was built in the 1870s.
