The town of Surfside Beach, South Carolina, was incorporated in 1964, and has become an ideal place for families with children. It has seven public parks, and it has been designated an autism-friendly community. Surfside Beach has also begun training local businesses to better understand the needs of people with autism. A great example of this is the Wild Water and Wheels amusement park, which offers mini golf, tube slides, wave pools, rides, and a race zone.

Another interesting site to visit in Surfside is the Fort Velasco museum. This replica of a fort that was destroyed in a battle in 1832 is still on the beach. Afterwards, the fort was converted into a lifeguard’s shelter.
Vehicles are not allowed on the beach during the peak summer months of May and September. However, dogs are welcome at the rest of the year. Parking on the beach is two-way and is available online. Parking on the beach is limited due to high tide, and the Chief Police might close the beach if the tide is high. Also, no street-licensed or all-terrain vehicles are allowed on the beach. Licensed golf carts are allowed, but you must have a valid driver’s license.
